If the answer is yes, Italy requires a special form of authentication.

The Apostille is a document that the Secretary of State attaches to your original birth/divorce/death certificates in order to authenticate public documents. Only through the Apostille foreign countries member of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty can accept the above mentioned documents.

In case you are a Naturalized US citizen your naturalization certificate (which must be apostilled) will substitute your birth certificate.

In light of the above, you must provide the following documents:

  • US Passport
  • Atto Notorio
  • Birth Certificate (both original and translated) + Apostille on the original
  • Divorce Decree or Death Certificate (original and translated) + Apostille on the original¬†(if applicable)
  • Nulla Osta or Nihil Obstat
